'Železná Ruda' (literally "
iron ore"), , () is a town in the
Pilsen Region of the
Czech Republic. It is located in the
Šumava Mountains, close to the border with
Bavaria and German town
Bayerisch Eisenstein. It has been one of the important sports and touristic centres of Šumava Mountains. German name of the town comes from Middle Ages, when it was a
market town.

The town is surrounded by forests and green mountains. Nature is nearly unspoiled and there are many beautiful places one can visit, e.g. lakes
Černé and
Čertovo jezero or a peak
Špičák (1202 m).
Historical
For example: The
Church of Panna Maria Pomocná z Hvězdy (with
Eastern-style
copula), the Chapel of st. Barbora (saint of mineworkers), the Way of the Cross etc. Local museum and information centre are located in a house, which was home to well-known family of glassmakers in the past. There is an exhibition of traditional glass, documents and photographies concerning history available for the whole year.

Economy
Local undertaking is very dependant on
tourism, because Železná Ruda is one of the favorite skiing centre of Šumava as well as excellent starting point for many exciting trips (not only in Czech Republic). This is why there is too many hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, bars, casinos, night clubs etc. compared to population.
