'Notes:'
★ Race scheduled to run on Sunday, May 25 but rain forced postponement first until Monday, May 26, and then Saturday, May 31.
★ Mario Andretti originally qualified in the second row, but a practice crash required him to start a back-up car at the rear of the field on race day.
★ Dennis Firestone, George Snider, and Jacques Villeneuve were involved in a major crash in the final practice session, and all three cars were too damaged to race. Firestone suffered a broken neck, and withdrew. Snider and Villeneuve drove back-up cars on race day, starting from the rear of the field. Dick Simon, took the 33rd starting position, vacated by Firestone, as the first alternate.
