1999 NFL DRAFT

The '1999 National Football League Draft' amateur college selection procedure known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting.
In this draft, the number of picks per round increased from 30 to 31 due to the reinstatement of the Cleveland Browns. Five quarterbacks were taken in the first twelve picks, including the first three picks overall, rivaling the Quarterback Class of 1983 in quantity,and the Quarterback Class of 1971, in which Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning and Dan Pastorini were taken with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall picks of the draft. Of the five quarterback picks of the 1999 draft, only Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles is officially a starting quarterback as of August 2007. However, even McNabb's status may be tentative as he has now failed to finish three of the preceding five seasons due to injuries, though he is the only one of the five to get his team into the Super Bowl (XXXIX, Feb. 6, 2005, v. Patriots, lost 24-21). Tim Couch, Akili Smith and Cade McNown are out of the game completely. However, Akili Smith recently signed a contract with the Canadian Football League. Daunte Culpepper's acquisition by the Oakland Raiders in 2007 places him in a position to take over as their starter, though no official decision has been made as of August 2007.
In addition, the New Orleans Saints traded all of their draft picks for Running back Ricky Williams, the first time ever that an NFL team has had only one pick in a draft.
Of the 31 players drafted in the first round, 13 are not currently employed in the NFL.
Of the 30 players drafted in the second round, 16 are not currently employed in the NFL.
