2006 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
__NOTOC__
'The 2006 NHL Entry Draft' was the 44th NHL Entry Draft. It was held at GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on June 24, 2006.
This was announced by commissioner Gary Bettman at the 2005 NHL Entry Draft just before the Pittsburgh Penguins made their 1st selection in the draft.
The draft order for the first 14 picks was decided during a lottery held on April 20 2006.
The draft was televised in Canada on TSN and RDS, with the first three hours simulcasted in the United States on OLN.
★ The Florida Panthers trade Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and the 163rd pick (Sergei Shirokov) to the Vancouver Canucks for Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Auld and Bryan Allen. (Note: This trade was actually completed 2 days prior, and officially announced the day BEFORE the draft)
★ The Atlanta Thrashers trade Patrik Stefan and Jaroslav Modry to the Dallas Stars for Niko Kapanen and the 210th pick (Will O'Neill).
★ The Colorado Avalanche trade Alex Tanguay to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold, the 59th pick (Codey Burki) and a conditional draft pick in 2007 or 2008.
★ The Montreal Canadiens trade the 16th pick (Ty Wishart) to the San Jose Sharks for the 20th pick (David Fischer) and the 53rd pick (Mathieu Carle).
★ The Los Angeles Kings trade Pavol Demitra to the Minnesota Wild for Patrick O'Sullivan and the 17th pick (Trevor Lewis).
★ The Boston Bruins trade Andrew Raycroft to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Tuukka Rask.
Canadians still ruled the first round in 2006 with 11 taken, but U.S.-born players again figured heavily in the NHL entry draft action. American defenseman Erik Johnson was the No. 1 overall pick by the St. Louis Blues, followed by Phil Kessel (No. 5), Kyle Okposo (No. 7) and Peter Mueller (No. 8) all hearing their names among the top 10. In all, a record 10 U.S.-born players were selected in the first round, and a total of 60 of the draft's 213 picks were chosen. The continues an upward swing for US hockey players taken in the opening round that has been progressing for several years. The 10 American first-round draftees in 2006 surpassed the previous records of eight in 2005 as well as seven taken in the 1986 and 2003 drafts. [source:USA Hockey][1]
