★ 2016 Summer Olympics — Host city to be chosen in 2009. Montreal, Canada will make a run at it, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the prior Olympics of 1976 that were held in the city. The United States is also expected to be the front-runner for the games choosing Chicago, meanwhile Mexico will launch the city of Monterrey as a candidate. The city of Tokyo is Japan's bid to host the event. Other frontrunners are considered to be Bangkok in Thailand.

★ The right for the U.S. forces to use Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands as a military base will end at this year, but there will be a provision for an automatic extension for another 20 years for the US forces to remain stationed on the island.
