SIXTH SS PANZER ARMY

The German 'Sixth Panzer Army' (6.Panzer-Armee) was formed as part of the Wehrmacht in the Autumn of 1944. On 2 April 1945, it was transferred to the Waffen-SS. The Sixth Panzer Army then became known as 'Sixth SS Panzer Army' (6.SS-Panzerarmee). The 'Sixth SS Panzer Army' is best noted for its leading role in the Battle of the Bulge.
Although it didn't receive the SS designation until after the Battle of the Bulge, the SS designation came into general use after the Second World War for the unit assembled prior to that campaign.
After the Ardennes Offensive, the Sixth SS Panzer Army was transferred to Hungary.
In March 1945, the Sixth SS Panzer Army launched Operation Frühlingserwachen. This was the German offensive around Lake Balaton.
In April 1945, towards the end of the war, the Sixth SS Panzer Army defended Vienna during the Soviets Vienna Offensive.
On 8 May 1945, the the Sixth SS Panzer Army was in Austria in the area beween Vienna and Linz.
