A-9 Highway re-opens
The Omanthai road barrier is reopened to facilitate civilians seeking shelter of the security forces unable to sustain LTTE brutality. The Media Centre for National Security said the Omanthai barrier was opened on behalf of the civilians. 14 civilians arrived from Mullaitivu with the opening of the barrier at 2.30 this afternoon. They comprised nine men and five women. The Media Centre said there was also a 12-year-old child. They confessed that LTTE brutality was rising daily and civilians in Mullaitivu and Killinochchi were subject to torture. These civilians revealed that people in Mullaitivu and Killinochchi are eagerly awaiting to reach government controlled areas.

3rd Edmonton International
The third Edmonton International Chess Championship will take place between July 31st-August 4th in the Edmonton Chess Club (#204, 10840 124 st. Edmonton, Alberta Canada) The tournament will be a 9 round Swiss system event with GM/IM norm opportunities. To ensure that norms are available 5 GMs will be invited to the event. Registered participants: GM Alexander Moiseenko (2650, Ukraine) Alexander is best known in Canada for his wins in two consecutive Canadian Opens (2003, 2004) In the 2005 Canadian Open in Edmonton Alexander was very close to getting a share of first place but he was upset in the last round. There is no doubt that this time Alexander would want to prove that he can win in Edmonton. GM Alexander Shabalov (2633, USA) GM Shabalov is a 4 time US Champion, with his most recent win happening in 2007. Besides winning numerous tournaments worldwide throughout his career Alexander is also known for his attacking and uncompromising style of play. This is a result of his chess upbringing which took place in Riga, Latvia, the home of the well known attacking former world champion Mikhail Tal. GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly (2614, India) GM Ganguly's most notable accomplishment is that he has won the Indian championship 5 times in a row from 2003-2008! Besides being an outstanding player in recent years GM Ganguly also tried his hand in coaching as he was the second of one of the world's top Grandmasters; Alexei Shirov, in some of world's top competitions. GM Jesse Kraai (2509, USA) Jesse is a native of Santa-Fe, New Mexico and he has participated in the previous two Edmonton Internationals as an IM, but now he will make his debut as a GM after receiving his title last September. In the past two years Jesse finished second, and even though this year's event promises to be quite a bit stronger, I am sure that Jesse won't shy away from going for the top position. IM Josh Friedel (2484, USA) IM Friedel currently has two GM norms thus he will be going for his last norm in Edmonton. Josh is a known tactician, so his ideas should bring many interesting games to the Edmonton International. IM Edward Porper (2482, Israel) IM Porper has one GM norm as he won the strong Liechtenstein Open in 2004, however he describes himself as a stronger coach than player and for someone that strong it sounds pretty scary! IM John Donaldson (2414, USA) IM Donaldson is best known for his writing of many chess books as well as being the president of North America's oldest chess club-the San-Francisco Mechanics Institute. Still, his chess skills and knowledge will allow him to be one of the top GM norm contenders of this event. IM Arias, Mauricio (2303, Costa Rica) FM Bindi Cheng (2294, Burnaby, BC, Canada) Eric Hansen (2241, Calgary, AB, Canada) FM Greg Huber (2236, Calgary, AB, Canada) Dale Haessel (2142, Calgary, AB Canada) David Ottosen (2133, Edmonton, AB, Canada/Costa Rica) Micah Hughey (Winner of the qualifier) (2007, Edmonton, AB, Canada)
