AFFLICTION (STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE)
'"Affliction"' is the title of a '' television episode from season four.
The Enterprise returns to Earth to take part in the maiden launch of the newest NX class ship, Columbia. Shortly after taking shore leave with the others, Phlox is kidnapped and taken to a secret Klingon research facility. The Klingon Empire needs Phlox's help to stop a disease that is the greatest threat that the Klingon race has ever faced. Archer sets out to find Phlox with few clues to go on, but is obstructed by Malcolm Reed. Meanwhile, Trip settles into his new life as Columbia's chief engineer.
★ Antaak says the virus is the worst threat to the Klingon Empire since the Hur'q invasion. This is a reference to the DS9 episode "The Sword of Kahless," in which we learn the Hur'q were a galactic power that conquered the Klingon homeworld about 1,000 years ago, plundering its treasures, including the sacred sword. The Klingons, true to their warrior nature, rebelled and cast away the Hur'q, which is the Klingon word for "outsider."
★ Harris' uniform is very similar to the one worn by Agent Sloan on DS9.
★ In DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations," when trying to figure out why the Klingons of the TOS era have smooth heads, O'Brien suggests genetic engineering and Bashir assumes a viral mutation. As we learn in this episode, both are correct.
★ Dr. Janice Lester, in ' episode "Turnabout Intruder", claimed that women could not become captains in Starfleet, but this episode features a female captain (Columbia's Captain Hernandez). However Janice Lester's mental condition was unstable, and she may have rationalized her inability to command a starship by telling herself her gender was the issue.
★ Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the animated show Family Guy, has a guest appearance in this episode as Ensign Rivers. MacFarlane is an avid Star Trek fan and has been known to have famous Star Trek stars, such as Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart, guest star in both Family Guy and American Dad.
★ About 8 1/2 minutes into the episode, ''Enterprise'' is shown in orbit over the Great Lakes. In a rendering goof, the lakes were mirror-flipped, so that Lake Ontario appears to be the westernmost lake and Lake Superior is shown to be far to the East.
★ Lieutenant Reed was told to meet his contact in Starfleet Intelligence at 1044 North Maple, San Francisco, California, USA, Earth, 94-1104-314159. As of 2007, San Francisco does not have a street named North Maple (although there is a Maple Street and a South Maple Street in South San Francisco, California). The first five digits of the number, 94110, form the ZIP Code for San Francisco's Mission District. The last digits are, of course, the first six digits of pi.
