ALAN A DALE (ROBIN OF SHERWOOD EPISODE)

"'Alan A Dale'" is the fifth episode of the 1984 television series ''Robin of Sherwood'' created by Richard Carpenter. It is about the young minstrel Alan a Dale who meets Robin (Michael Praed). The Sheriff of Nottingham (Nickolas Grace) is marrying his love, Mildred, and gets Alan to help him.
The plot of the episode is derived from the seventeenth century ballad "Robin Hood and Alan a Dale"; the use of beehives as weapons is inspired by an episode in E. Charles Vivian's novel ''The Adventures of Robin Hood'' (1927).
The episode is written by Richard Carpenter, directed by Ian Sharp and the music is by Clannad.

If this episode is correctly placed chronologically (before ''The King's Fool'', set in March 1194), it should take place in 1193. It is certainly set after all the previous Season 1 episodes and before any in Season 2. However, since no episode in Season 2 can be said with certainty to take place before 1199, it is possible that ''Alan a Dale'' belongs after ''The King's Fool'', some time between March 1194 and April 1199.
