ALAN BERSIN
'Alan Bersin' is a former Secretary of Education for California, as well as a former superintendent of San Diego City Schools and former Attorney General’s Southwest Border Representative, or "Border Czar." He currently serves on the executive committee of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.[1]
Mr. Bersin was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended public schools in New York City.
He received an A.B. in government from Harvard, and then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. In 1974, he obtained a J.D. degree from Yale Law School.
Mr. Bersin served as the Attorney General’s Southwest Border Representative, and coordinated law enforcement on the border between the U.S. and Mexico.
His appointment as Superintendent of Public Education in San Diego City Schools put him in control of the eighth largest urban school district in the U.S.[2]
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger appointed him to a position as California's Education Secretary. [3]
He was most recently appointed to the executive committee of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.[4]
On April 06, 2007, Republican Senator Orrin Hatch wrote a letter to Tim Russert claiming that he had intended to name Alan Bersin, instead of his successor Carol Lam, as a U.S. Attorney appointed for political reasons, when on Meet The Press he (Hatch) described someone who was "... a former law professor, no prosecutorial experience, and the former campaign manager in Southern California for Clinton...". Hatch ‘Corrects’ Lam Error By Disparaging Another U.S. Attorney — Will Russert Repeat It? . It is unclear that this is an accurate description of Bersin.
