ALAN HASKVITZ
'Alan Paul Haskvitz' is a teacher and author. He has been inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame and was named as a "Hero in Education" by Reader's Digest. His career as an educator has spanned 30 years, and he is notable for introducing "quality circles" into the education field and for being one of the first to actively promote "service learning" as part of a social science curriculum. He has been selected six times as one of the best teachers in the United States.

Haskvitz's qualifications include the teaching of history, journalism, English, social studies, art, business, computers, museumology, Asian Studies, and the education of gifted children — he is considered an expert in dealing with the exceptionally gifted. He has credentials from Canada, New York, and California.

The curriculum of which he was a mentor and department head increased CAP/CLAS test scores from the 22nd percentile to the 94th percentile, the largest gain in California history. The program was selected as exemplary on the state and national level.
Haskvitz has written a book: ''Motorvation: A Math Book for the Unmotivated'' and is a columnist for ''Education News''.
In addition he has received the National Bicentennial Teaching Award from the Bicentennial Committee, the Spirit of Education Award, the National Broadcasting Company Crystal Apple Award, the
Presidential Award for Environmental Education, the United Nations Scholarship Award, was a finalist for Internet Teacher of the Year, earned the Busch National Planet Earth Award, the Disney Civic Achievement Regional Award, was a runner-up for the International Teacher of the Year, an Economics America, National Teacher Fellow, a National Winner for Respecteen, received the Lifetouch National Grant for innovative curriculum, was a runner-up for the SAS Most Creative Technology Teacher, Homework Central's 100 Most Influential Educators, won the Daughters of the American Colonies Teacher of the Year recognition, the National Highway and Safety Commission national award, developed a Center for Civic Participation exemplary program, was given the National Wildlife Association Award for exceptional teaching of ecology, and received grants from the American Political Science Association, the National Garden Association, Planet Earth, and the Student-Parent Mock Election awards.
State and local awards include two Golden Bell awards from the California School Board Association for outstanding programs, the California Council for the Social Studies award, the California Agriculture Teacher of the Year Award, the California Water Education Program of the Year Award, and the Perryman Award for Los Angeles County’s superior social studies program.
He has also been given the Pomona Valley Outstanding Educator Award, the Audubon Society Outstanding Program Award, and
California winner, and Best Environmental Garden from the 48th Agriculture District.
His work has been featured in three educational textbooks, Educational Psychology, US History, and Making Schools Better.
He has been selected as an outstanding alumnus by Chaffey College, Chaffey High School, and Cal Poly State University at Pomona.
His work has been featured on National Public Radio, in Newsweek and Time, in USA Today, and on major television networks.
His teams have won the provincial and world girl’s basketball championships, and the Canadian art champions. His students’ work was selected the best from 20,000 entries and they testified before the United Nations on the importance of environmental education. His student’s work was selected the best from 12,000 entries earned an all expense paid trip to Washington DC to meet the President. Curriculum was selected one of 200 exemplary ones from 6300 entries by Life Touch. The National Wildlife Federation selected my program best from 9000 entries for teaching students about political action and the environment. His student’s integrated work in agriculture was chosen as one of the top 12 in the nation and was shared on national television. His students’ book review was published in the National Middle School Newsletter. Haskvitz piloted the Close-Up Foundations National Community Service Program. His student’s community service curriculum resulted in earning the Disney Regional Award for graffiti campaign that reduced graffiti by 90 percent in the community and the school and produced a police orientated newsletter. Haskvitz's students represented California in Project Citizen for their worldwide study of voter participation. Their work was the centerpiece for the County of Los Angeles summit called by the Los Angeles Registrar of Voters and lead to rewriting of the country voting poll rules and the state registration forms. Drawing upon training from Honda, Seiko and Toyota, he introduced quality circles into the classroom education field. His student’s work has earned trips for them to New York, Washington DC, Tampa, Atlanta, Sea World, and Disneyland. The program earned over $100,000. He also initiated one of Canada’s largest basketball organizations in Cornwall, Ontario. The teams won both provincial and world honors. The wheelchair team also won many awards. His third grade reading program produced some of nation’s fastest reading students at over 2000 words per minute with over 70 percent retention. His students won seven congressional writing competitions and over 20 essay and speech contests. He also does book reviews for Education Book Reviews, writes a syndicated car column called The Car Family, which was selected one of the best researched automobile review columns on the Internet and runs in Canada, the United States and Australia, and was recently featured in the Teachers Calendar. He also serves as an advisor to Americans All, a group committed to providing free multicultural materials to all schools. Haskvitz was also featured in Futures, a video series on applied math and career possibilities.
