ALBERT II, MARGRAVE OF MEISSEN

'Albert II, the Degenerate' (1240 – 20 November 1314, Erfurt), Margrave of Meißen and Landgrave of Thuringia, was the son of Henry III, Margrave of Meißen and Constantia of Austria.
Albrecht was married from 1254 to Margaret of Sicily, the daughter of emperor Frederick II. As a dowry the Pleißnerland was pledged to the house of Wettin. With his spouse, Albrecht had four children: Henry, Frederick, Diezmann and Agnes. After what was at first a happy rule and marriage, Albrecht turned away from Margarete and began a passionate love affair with Kunigunde of Eisenberg. As a result, Margarete left the Wartburg on 24 June 1270 and went to Frankfurt am Main where she died on 8 August of the same year. The two younger sons Frederick and Diezmann were looked after by their uncle, Dietrich, Margrave of Landsberg. Henry, the oldest, disappeared in Silesia in 1283.
Albrecht married Kunigunde in 1274 and the emperor legitimised their son Apitz.
