'Alcañices' is a small town in the province of
Zamora,
Spain. It is very close to the border with
Portugal, not far from the Portuguese town of
Bragança. The population is 1,300 inhabitants.
On September 12, 1297 the
Treaty of Alcañices was signed in Alcañices between Portugal and Castile. This treaty established the border between Portugal and Spain which is one of the oldest borders in Europe.
