ALEGRETE

'Alegrete' is a town and a municipality in Rio Grande do Sul, South of Brazil. Located at .

Its medium altitude is 102 m. Its estimated population in 2004 was 87,236 habitants and the total area is 7,804 km² (the largest municipality of the State). Its habitants are called ''"alegretenses"''.
It was founded in 1857.
It is the native town of the politician, diplomat, statesman and President of United Nations (1947) Oswaldo Aranha and of the great Brazilian poet Mário Quintana.
It is considered the most ''"gaúcha"'' (see gaucho) of the cities in the world. On every September, 20 (the Gaucho's Day) about 8,000 young, adult and old horsemen and horsewomen parade proudly through its streets, using their native costumes and riding their horses with the richest trappings. This is the biggest of this kind of parade in the whole world.
