Story

Plot summary

The story opens with 14 year old orphan Alex Rider learning that his guardian and uncle, Ian Rider, has died in a car accident. Suspicious about the circumstances of his uncle's death, Alex decides to investigate himself and discovers that Ian is a spy, working for MI6. Alex is told that his uncle was investigating Herod Sayle, an Egyptian businessman and computer entrepreneur, who is donating a revolutionary computer system to every secondary school in the United Kingdom. MI6 forcibly recruit Alex to become a spy and place him in a gruelling SAS training camp before being moved onto Sayle's compound to investigate.
Universe

When not on missions, Alex is cared for by his American housekeeper, Jack Starbright. After his uncle's death, Jack became his legal guardian and stayed in England to care for him. The pair live in Chelsea, London, where Alex attends the local Brookland School. His school life is often interrupted by the missions set by MI6. Alan Blunt is head of MI6's Special Operations Branch and along with his second-in-command, Tulip Jones, the two frequently appear throughout the novels, usually to brief and de-brief Alex with his missions.
In each novel, a villain appears, each having a plan which Alex (and MI6) must thwart.
