ALLAN MCGREGOR
'Allan James McGregor' (born January 31, 1982, in Edinburgh) is a professional football goalkeeper currently playing for Scottish Premier League club Rangers.
McGregor signed for Rangers in 1998 and was touted as an excellent goalkeeping prospect. His high hopes were put on hold when he injured his wrist during a youth match, somewhat stunting his development. He has spent time at two clubs on loan: St. Johnstone, for whom he kept six consecutive clean sheets, being the first to do so for the club. He spent the 2005-06 campaign on loan at Dunfermline Athletic.
On 8 August, 2006, it was announced McGregor was free to find a new club.[1] Despite having limited first-team opportunities, and reported interest from Premiership club Sheffield United, McGregor signed a new contract on 27 October 2006, keeping him with the club until 2009.[2]
He is currently the regular first-choice goalkeeper at Rangers, with Roy Carroll as back-up. Lionel Letizi was signed in the 2006 summer transfer window, and expected to be first-choice goalkeeper, but due to injuries to Letizi and Stefan Klos, McGregor played in a series of first-team games, subsequently keeping his place. During this run he played his first-ever European game, keeping a clean sheet in a goalless draw against Molde F.K. in the UEFA Cup.[3] After the second-leg game against Molde FK, at Ibrox, McGregor was named Man of the Match.[4] He was also named SPL Player of the Month for September 2006.[5]
McGregor was dropped after Letizi returned from injury. A goal conceded by Letizi in a single-goal home defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle led to many fans calling for McGregor to be reinstated in goal; however, then-manager Paul Le Guen remained faithful to the French goalkeeper and Letizi continued to play in the subsequent matches, until suffering another injury during the warm-up of Rangers' UEFA Cup match against Maccabi Haifa.
On January 30 2007, ex-Rangers manager Alex McLeish named McGregor in his first squad as Scotland manager.[6]
On February 22 2007, McGregor was sent off during Rangers' UEFA Cup match at Ibrox against Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv, which they won 4-0. After Ferguson's second goal, Italian referee Matteo Trefoloni gave a straight red card to the goalkeeper, for apparently headbutting Hapoel substitute Luciano de Bruno. Despite the incident not being caught on television cameras, and McGregor's denying headbutting de Bruno, he was given a two-match ban,[7] although it was reduced to a one-game ban on appeal.
On April 16 2007, at the end of his first season in the Rangers first team, McGregor was voted Rangers' ''Player's Player of the Year'' at an award ceremony, as voted for by his team-mates.[8]
He made his international debut against Austria on May 30 2007.
