ALLISTON, ONTARIO

'Alliston, Ontario' is an Ontario community just about 90 kilometres NNW from Toronto, and about 40 km SW of Barrie, about 18 km W of Cookstown, about 10 km N of Tottenham, about 40 km NE of Orangeville and about 30 km E of Shelburne. It is part of the Town of New Tecumseth which is part of Simcoe County. (The 1991 amalgamation of Alliston, nearby villages Beeton and Tottenham, and the Township of Tecumseth, created one legal municipality, the Town of New Tecumseth. Municipal offices for the Town are located in Alliston.) The heart of the community is divided by Highway 89. It was founded in 1847 by English immigrant William Fletcher.
Alliston is located where the corners of four of the original townships of southern Simcoe County (Adjala, Tosorontio, Essa, and Tecumseth) meet.
Earl Rowe Provincial Park is located three kilometers west of Alliston, in the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio. It is one of the largest provincial parks in Southern Ontario. lots of drinking goes on here.
The town grew as a commercial centre for the area farmers and was best known as a potato-growing area. It is still a major industry in the town and is celebrated by the annual Alliston Potato Festival.
Honda of Canada Manufacturing, Inc. operates an auto manufacturing plant, the biggest industry in Simcoe County, located to the southeast of Alliston, along the Tottenham Road (Simcoe Road 10); less than 1 km south of Highway 89. The plant had a minor fire in the late 1990s. There are now 2 plants and Honda employs approximately 4,500 people One plant currently manufactures the Civic and Acura CSX, while the second also builds Civics (Sedans only) alongside the Ridgeline pickup truck and the Acura MDX. A third Honda plant, for the construction of engines, is being built and is supposed to open in 2008 and during this they will close part of Tottenham Road (from Albert Street to Industrial Parkway) and extend Highway 10 to Industrial Parkway this road will open on December 27 [1]. There will be a Wal-Mart Supercenter [2] built on this road behind the Ford dealership
[3] This will be one of the several Supercenters in Canada and possibly one of the biggest.
The most famous citizen of Alliston was Sir Frederick Banting the co-discoverer of insulin. The town's only high school is named in his honour, Banting Memorial High School. Another famous resident was Theodore Loblaw of the grocery store chain.
The current mayor of New Tecumseth is Mike McEachern. The Member of Provincial Parliament is Jim Wilson, & the MP of Simcoe-Grey is Helena Guergis, of the Conservative Party of Canada.

The surrounding area is made up of farmlands to its east and the south along with the north and west. The forests lie to the northwest, the southwest, the south and to the east along with rolling hills. The town as two parks- Riverdale Park to the north along the Boyne River and PPG Park to the south, by the local fire department. Major residential areas are located to the north (as Previn Court Homes) and to the south, with additional residential and commercial developments made since then in the northwest (as "Alliston West"), north and southwest since the mid-1990s, with future developments expected in the future that could raise the population from 17,000 to 20,000. The urban area stretches from west to east, is nearly 3 km, and from north to south ranges from 300 m, 600 m to 1 km. Another residential area, adjacent to the Nottawasaga Inn are located 5 km east of Alliston- the first phase built is known as Green Briar; the second phase, to the west of the Inn is known as Briar Hill. The Nottawasaga River is situated east of the town; the Boyne River, which runs through Alliston, joins the Nottawasaga, just downstream from Nicolston Dam. The CP rail (Toronto - Parry Sound - Sudbury) runs to its east with a small freight yard for Honda vehicles. Many other business thrive today in Alliston. Honda Motor Manufacturing has two facilities.
Alliston has two publics Elementary Schools (Ernest Cumberland and Alliston Union ) and two Catholic elementary schools (Holy Family and St. Paul's), one public high school (Banting Memorial), a post office, four banks, a small movie theater, the Circle Theatre, and several parks. Riverdale Park is the largest, and is adjacent to the Rotary Pool, an outdoor pool. The pool is a large, round concrete pool that replaced the original pool many years ago.
The Alliston Fire Station now known as New Tecumseth Fire Station #1 was officially founded as the Alliston Fire Brigade in 1906 after many years having a non-incorporated Fire Brigade. Station #1 currently has 29 serving Officers and Firefighters, with the District Chief Hank Williams, Assistant District Chief Ken Beattie as well as 6 other Officers.
The New Tecumseth Fire Department is a Composite Department with a full time Fire Chief Dan Heydon and a Fire Prevention Officer Simon Worley, all other members are "Volunteers" or part time Firefighters on 24 hour call seven days a week.
Jungle gyms at the parks were donated by the Kinsmen, a local charity group.
