ALRESFORD (ESSEX) RAILWAY STATION

'Alresford railway station' is on the Tendring Hundred Railway and serves the village of Alresford, Essex, England. (Network Rail call it simply "Alresford", ignoring the fact that there also exists Alresford (Hampshire) railway station.) It is operated by 'one'.
As of February 2006, the original station house is almost derelict but is available to let. Tickets are sold from a small cabin close to Station Road. The ticket clerk is also responsible for moving the level crossing gates each time a train passes.
Prior to electrification of the line, the ticket clerk operated the level crossing gates, home and distance signals on both the up and down lines, his own level crossing gate lock and the one for the level crossing a short distance down the line, at all times that the signal box was unmanned. Edward Burbage fulfilled this duty for nearly 50 years.
