'Amravati' (also known as 'Amrawati' or 'Amraoti') is a city in the state of Maharashtra in India. It is believed to be the city of Lord Indra, the king of all gods. It has very historical temples of Goddess Ambadevi and Mahanubhava's Lord ShriKrishna Temple.
Amravati is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 343 metres (1125 feet). It lies 156 km (97 miles) west of Nagpur, and serves as the administrative center of Amravati District and of Amravati Division. As with so many other small cities in India, Amravati is growing rapidly in terms of living quality. New flyovers and roads are being built to renovate the city, and other improvements like new traffic signals are underway under IRDP (Integrated Road Development Programme)implemented by government of Maharashtra
The town is located near the passes through the hills that separate the cotton-growing regions of the Purna basin to the West and the Wardha basin to the East. Amravati is a growing industrial center, with cotton mills as an important industry.
The town is expanding toward Badnera, 10 km to the south, which is the location of the railway junction where the branch railway line serving Amravati joins the main Mumbai - Bhusawal - Wardha - Nagpur - Howrah rail route.
National Highway 6 from Hajira (Surat) to Kolkatta passes through the city, which is part of Asian Highway 6.
As of 2001 India census,[2] Amravati had a population of 549,370. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Amravati has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 54% of the males and 46% of females literate. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Amravati Mythological: Temple of goddess Amba is one of the famous spiritual in Amravati. In Navaratri there is a fare for 9 days where in people from all near by towns and cities participate. Elder tell that when Lord Krishna Ran away with Rukhamini from her wedding ceremony, he used a tunnel laying from Amba Devi temple to Koundynapur- another spiritual place, This tunnel is still there and is now closed. researching team tried to investigate about length of this tunnel but in vain.
Freedom fighter Bhagat singh was hiding for 3 days in Amravati during his underground tenure and he frequently visited Hanuman Akhada ( A Gym) during that time.
Amravati has emerged as an educational center offering many programs including medical and engineering courses. In addition to Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University (http://www.sgbau.ac.in/), [(Government College of Pharmacy , Kathora Naka ,Walgaon Road ,Amravati([1]Government College of Engineering, Amravati (http://www.gcoea.ac.in/) and a Government Polytechnic are located in Amravati. V.Y.W.S.'s Prof. Ram Meghe Institute of Technology & Research (http://www.coebadnera.com/) is located at Badnera. V.Y.W.S`s College of Engineering Badnera (now, V.Y.W.S.'s Prof. Ram Meghe Institute of Technology & Research)is also one of the good engineering colleges which also has a C-DAC center with Super Computer in it. The name of the college recently changed. New engineering colleges are coming up with every year, the latest additions being HVPM's Engg. College and the Sipna College of Engg. and Technology. There are some excellent high schools around the area with Takhatmal English High School,Manibai Gujrathi High School, New High School, Latebai School, Golden Kids English High School, Holy Cross, Dyanmata (St. Joseph), and St. Francis High School being the pioneers in providing quality English medium education. Fulor is a famous 35 years old art institute in Sangani Nagar. Many artists in India start drawing and develop skills from this institute. Mr. Shrikant Joshi is founder of the institute. Amravati is home to "Tapovan", society for leprosy affected people established by late Dr. Shivajirao Patvardhan in 1968. The campus of Sant Gadgebaba Amravati University is located near to it.
Amravati district has been traditionally a cotton growing area with the climate suited to textile production. It is also home to "Shivtekdi", a popular hilltop place with hundreds of people jogging in that area. Efforts are being done to revamp the "Maaltekdi", to make it a healthy destination for all early exercisers. Students and professionals from Amravati are scatterred all over the world and contributing towards globalization.
Though Amravati is improving it still has a long way to go to become one of the dominant cities in the state.

Born on December 19, 1934, in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, Pratibatai Patil practised as a lawyer before joining politics.She married Amaravati based Educationist by profession Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat on July 7, 1965. Shekhawat had been a mayor of Amravati. A social worker by profession, Patil is associated with various cultural, educational and social welfare organisations. Together with her husband, she set up an educational institute, Vidya Bharati Shikshan Prasarak Mandal at Amaravati. Pratibha Patil joined politics at an early age, and won her first elections to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1962. At the age of 27, she was among the youngest MLAs at the time. She was a member of Maharashtra Assembly from 1962 to 1985 during which she was a minister holding portfolios like urban development and housing education, tourism, parliamentary affairs, public health and social welfare, cultural affairs, working her way up from the rank of deputy minister to Cabinet as also in Congress hierarchy.In 1985 she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. She was Maharashtra Congress chief from 1988 to 1990 before being elected to Lok Sabha from Amravati in 1991. It was in November 2004 that the Congress leadership recalled her to become the governor of Rajasthan. 'Now Pratibhatai Patil is the First woman President of India.'
The current Member of Legislative Assembly is Dr. Sunil Deshmukh of the Indian National Congress (INC). He is also a Minster of State for Finance and Planning, Water Resources, Parliamentary Affairs and Command Area Development in the Government of Maharashtra. He is the guardian minister for Amravati and Bhandara Districts of Vidarbha, Maharashtra. He also serves as the present Vice-Chairman of the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC).
