'Andrews' is a town in South Carolina and is situated on the boundary with part of the town in Georgetown County and part of the town in Williamsburg County. The population was 3,068 at the 2000 census, and center of a slightly larger urban cluster of 4,204.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,068 people, 1,182 households, and 843 families residing in the town. The population density was 538.4/km² (1,392.6/mi²). There were 1,347 housing units at an average density of 236.4/km² (611.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 37.55% White, 60.76% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.88% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.43% of the population.
There were 1,182 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 26.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town the population was spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 77.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $19,375, and the median income for a family was $22,750. Males had a median income of $24,891 versus $17,344 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,105. About 30.8% of families and 34.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 45.8% of those under age 18 and 21.4% of those age 65 or over.

Early History

Andrews was incorporated as a town in 1909. At the time, the area was comprised of two other communities called Harper's Station and Rosemary, which were settled a mile apart along the rails of the Georgetown and Western Railroad. In 1909, voters agreed to incorporate the two separate towns into a single community, which was named Andrews, after Captain W.M. Andrews, who was key in the development of the town. in 1905, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad build a route through the town, along with a sizable maintenance shop. By 1919, Andrews had reached a population of 2,000. When the depression of the 1930s started, Andrews was hit hard, losing almost 700 people over night when the Seaboard Air Line Railroad scaled back its operations. In 1931 the local economy was dealt a further blow when the Atlantic Coast Lumber Co closed its nearby plant. The economy subsequently improved in the late 1930s when an International Paper Company paper mill was built in Georgetown County. [1]
