ANNA MAE HAYS
Brigadier General Anna Mae Hays(b. 16 February 1920) was the first woman in the U.S. Military to be promoted to a general officer rank. She was promoted on 11 June 1970, after the being appointed by President Nixon on 15 May of that year. She was chief of the Army Nurse Corps from 1 September 1967 to 31 August 1971.
On the same day, directly after the promotion of Colonel Hays, Elizabeth P. Hoisington was also promoted to Brigadier General.
