Performances
Notable musical roles include lead roles in ''The Phantom of the Opera'', ''The Secret Garden'' (as Archibald Craven), ''Annie'', ''Guys and Dolls'' (as "Sky Masterson"), ''My Fair Lady'' (as "Henry Higgins"), ''Jekyll and Hyde'' (vocal recording only), and ''Man of La Mancha'', as well as a significant supporting role in ''Les Misérables'' (as "Enjolras")
His opera roles include major roles in ''Die Fledermaus'' (as "Gabriel Eisenstein"), ''The Magic Flute'' (as "Papageno"), ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' (as "Puck"), and ''The Tales of Hoffman.
Anthony Warlow was the youngest baritone ever to play the role of "Papageno" in a major Australian production at the age of 21.
His Gilbert and Sullivan roles for Opera Australia include the featured comedic role in ''The Mikado'' (as "Ko-Ko") in 2004, as well as appearing in major roles in the 1996 production of ''Patience'' (as "Archibald Grosvenor") and in the 2005 double-bill of ''Trial by Jury'' (as the "Learned Judge") and ''H.M.S. Pinafore'' (as "Captain Corcoran"), and ''The Pirates of Penzance'' (as "The Pirate King"). Apart from ''The Mikado'', these the Gilbert and Sullivan productions are available on DVD. In 1987, Warlow performed a one man show, ''A Song to Sing O'', about George Grossmith, the comedian who originated the principal comic roles for Gilbert and Sullivan from 1877 through the 1880s.
Phantom of the Opera
'2007-2008'
Anthony Warlow's portrayal of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s the Phantom of the Opera (in the first Australian production, ca. 1990), was a demanding role, vocally, dramatically and physically, and is regarded as being among the finest in the world. Critics have been quoted as noting his was the only performance to rival Michael Crawford's (the original Phantom in the West End and on Broadway) legendary interpretation of the role. At 28 years old, he became the youngest actor to hold the role, a distinction he holds to this day.
Phantom of the Opera has re-opened in Australia on the 28th of July, having been announced in October, 2006 that Warlow would once again take on the lead role[1]. Alongside Warlow, Australia's Ana Marina and John Bowles were cast as Christine Daae and Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny. The tour began with immediate success, however Anthony Warlow missed out on over a weeks worth of preformances towards the start of the season, excluding the opening night, having caught influenza along with many other cast and crew members. Warlow’s understudy, Simon Pryce,[2] had taken aboard the heavy role with success until Warlow's return on the 9th of August.[3]
Anthony Warlow will be singing the role of the Phantom in Brisbane's Lyric Theatre from early February, 2008.
The Pirates of Penzance
'Opera Australia — 2006–2007 tour'
Warlow most recently appeared in the Opera Australia production of "''The Pirates of Penzance''" (another popular Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera), in which he played the role of the "Pirate King" — with performances during 2006 in Sydney, New South Wales (at the Sydney Opera House), in Canberra, A.C.T. and in Brisbane, Queensland (at the Lyric Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre), as well as enjoying full houses in Melbourne, Victoria in 2007.
Anthony Warlow's Pirate King appeared in dress, voice and mannerism very similar to Captain Jack Sparrow from "''Pirates of the Caribbean''". In a press interview in Brisbane, Anthony Warlow said that he had deliberately based his Pirate King on Johnny Depp's character from "''Pirates of the Caribbean''" so that people who may not know the opera but are aware of the "''Pirates of the Caribbean''" trilogy of movies could enjoy the opera more.[4].
David Hobson (as "Frederic") and Suzanne Johnston (as "Ruth") also appeared in this production. The lead female role of Mabel, initially played by Emma Matthews was taken over by emerging soprano Taryn Fiebig for most of the tour. John Bolton-Wood, originally cast as "Major-General Stanley" was replaced by Reg Livermore for the Melbourne season, and the role of the "Sergeant of Police" in Melbourne given to Shane Lorencev after the departure of popular bass Richard Alexander, the original "Sergeant".
This production of "''The Pirates of Penzance''" - featuring all the original cast with the exception of Emma Matthews whose role was taken by Taryn Fiebig - was shown on television by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Saturday night 9 December, 2006. A DVD of the production was subsequently released. Anthony Warlow was back on television, in a concert performance, on the night of 24 December (the concert was shown by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation).
Health and work
Anthony Warlow was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1992, during the early publicity for the arena production of Jesus Christ Superstar where he was to appear as Pilate. This forced him to put his career on hold for about a year while he battled the disease. He returned to the performance circuit in the second half of 1993 with a national concert tour for the launch of his Back In The Swing album. He has since done promotional work for the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia.
His 4th solo album, Midnight Dreaming, made it to the top ten of the Australian Aria Charts.
His Fans
Anthony Warlow's ability to absorb himself completely into his roles, along with his impeccable singing, have won him legions of fans not just from his native Australia but from around the world. While he may not be the household name in the United States or Great Britain that he is Down Under, there are several strong and vocal online communities committed to preserving his work. Members of these fan groups - or 'Warlovians' as they style themselves - have recently been involved in lobbying for Warlow to be cast as the lead in the movie version of the Leslie Bricusse/Frank Wildhorn musical Jekyll & Hyde which is currently in its planning stages.
