ARARAT RAILWAY LINE, VICTORIA

The 'Ararat railway line' is a regional railway in Victoria, Australia. It continues from the Ballarat line. It has 3 stations, with a fourth (new) station in Wendouree to open in 2008.
Prior to conversion to standard gauge of the line from Ararat through to Adelaide as part of the One Nation Program, the Ararat railway line formed part of the main interstate line between Melbourne and Adelaide, carrying The Overland services to Adelaide as well as V/Line services to Horsham and Dimboola. V/Line passenger rail services beyond Ballarat were withdrawn on 27 May 1994.[1] In 1995, the main interstate line was rerouted via North Shore and Maroona and the broad gauge line between Ballarat and Ararat was closed to all traffic.
As part of the Transit Cities program, a new station is to open in Wendouree in 2008. The new station, yet to be officially named (currently the subject of a public naming competition), will be located approximately 50 metres west of Gillies Street, provide 200 car park spaces (with potential expansion to 500) and service the nearby areas of Wendouree, Lake Wendouree, Miners Rest and Learmonth.
