ARSINOE (CRETE)

'Arsinoe' (Greek: ) was an ancient city of Crete assigned to Lyctus, adjacent to (and some authors say overlaying) the older city of Rhithymna. (Steph. B. s.v.) Berkelius supposes that an error had crept into the text, and that for we should read . Its existence has been confirmed by some coins with the types and emblems peculiar to the Cretan mints. (Eckhel, vol. ii. p. 304.) The city was founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus and named for Arsinoe II of Egypt, his sister and wife.
