ARUL SUPPIAH
'Arul Suppiah' (born August 30 1983 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) is a Malaysian cricketer who plays for Somerset. He is a right-handed batsman, occasional slow left-arm bowler and a brilliant fielder.
Arul is the youngest ever cricketer to represent his native Malaysia, at the age of 15. He is a product of Millfield School and attended the University of Exeter. Arul played for England at U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-18 level. In 1998 he was voted Somerset U-15 Player of the Year and West of England U-15 Player of the Year. He has also played for Devon.
He made his Somerset first-class debut in 2002, playing in the tied game against West Indies A at Taunton, taking 3-46 in one innings, and four National League games. Opportunities were limited until the second half of the 2005 season when Arul became one of the crop of youngsters offered regular first team cricket.
He responded by hitting his maiden first class century, 123 against Derbyshire at Derby, 91 against Northamptonshire at Taunton and 72 against Worcestershire at Worcester, finishing the season with a first class average of 32.23. In the totesport League Arul averaged over 30, with a top score of 79 against Derbyshire at Derby. Arul was also a member of the squad who won the 2005 Twenty20 Cup, playing in several of the group games.
He played regularly for Somerset in the 2006 season and scored 563 first-class runs at an average of nearly 30. His highest score was 99 against Leicestershire.
He is a talented all-round sportsman, having played hockey for England Under-16s and badminton for Millfield School.
His brother Rohan Suppiah has played first-class cricket for Malaysia.
