ASSUMPTION COLLEGE SCHOOL
(Redirected from Assumption Catholic High School)
'Assumption College Catholic High School' is an International Baccalaureate authorized catholic high school in Windsor, Ontario.
Assumption was founded by the Basilian Fathers in 1870 as part of Assumption University, which is now part of the University of Windsor. Assumption was at first a private boarding school for young men, but evolved into a co-educational secondary school within the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.
Assumption offers a range of secondary programs including the IB Diploma Programme, as well as Co-op, OYAP, MOYAP and others. The school has a population of approximately 650 students. This secondary school is among the smallest in the Windsor-Essex Area.
The current principal is Mary Parent.
The IB programme has been quite successful. Mme Genevieve Cano, who is one of the program's French teachers, is the director of the programme. Starting in 2004, it has attracted over 130 students within years, which is expected to increase with airing of a commercial on A channel, starting in January 2007. Assumption is the only IB public school in Windsor; the only other IB school is Academie Ste. Cecile International School, which is a private school. Though Villanova High School has attempted to get an IB certificate, they have yet to receive one because there is a lack of qualified IB teachers.
The IB programme offers motivated students a chance to prepare themselves for University by offering a more challenging curriculum as well as a more international perspective on education. There are qualified teachers for math, history, biology, French, English, and art, teaching the Grade 11 and 12 IB curriculum, though there are presently no IB students in grade 12. The number of applicants for entry to the programme is more than doubling every year. As of yet, there are 20 students presently in the IB programme, as it officially commences in the 11th grade, with around 80 students in the pre IB program.
