'Atwater Township' is one of the eighteen townships of Portage County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 2,762 people in the township.[1]

Geography


Located in the southern part of the county, it borders the following townships:

Edinburg Township - north

Palmyra Township - northeast corner

Deerfield Township - east

Lexington Township, Stark County - south

Marlboro Township, Stark County - southwest

Randolph Township - west

Rootstown Township - northwest corner
No municipalities are located in Atwater Township.
Formed from the Connecticut Western Reserve, Atwater Township covers an area of 25 mi².

Name and history


It is the only Atwater Township statewide.

Government


The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township clerk, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the clerkship or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.

Public services


The school district in Atwater is Waterloo Local Schools, which is also the school district for neighboring Randolph Township. The elementary, middle, and high schools are all in the same location at 1464 Industry Road.
The Atwater Fire Department is a volunteer fire department consisting of approximately 30 members and four cadets.
