AUK CLASS MINESWEEPER

The '''Auk'' class' of naval ships were allied minesweeper warships during the second World War. In total, there were a recorded 95 ''Auk''-class minesweepers under allied command during that time.
The ''Auk''-class ships weighed 890 BRT on average, and had an approximate length of 220-225 feet. They could reach a maximum speed of about 18.1 knots. The ''Auk'' class minesweepers were equipped with a single 3 inch caliber gun, two 40 mm caliber guns, and eight 20 mm caliber guns. Under Lend-Lease, a small number of the minesweepers were transferred to the Royal Navy, and were then known as the ''Catherine'' class. The exact number of those transferred is not known. Eleven minesweepers of the ''Auk'' class were lost in World War II, while only one (the USS ''Skill'') was sunk — by ''U-593''.
