 | AutoDrill Multiple Spindle Tapping Operation on Drill Press AutoDrill Multiple Spindle Tapping on Drill Press. The customer wanted to tap three holes at a time using a typical drill press. Rather than using self-reversing tap heads such as the Tapmatic heads Autodrill offers, the customer chose the Grizzly G0521 self reversing drill press. As you can see, the process works great even at this slow, "beta test" RPM. The RPM could be increased. The multiple spindle head could be mouted to a CATxx taper and used on a CNC machine for rigid tapping... But usually it is a manually loaded tool. Reversing the dril press motor over and over is not suggested unless you have an inverter handling the loads, etc. Ellis makes a similar drill press that would work very well for this type of application in a high volume, manual production run. This is a slow speed, very manual test with manual lubrication, etc. The process time could be significantly improved by spending more than 5 minutes setting it up.
