In Brooklyn, New York City, United States, most of the bus routes (see list of bus routes in Brooklyn) are the successors to streetcar lines (see list of streetcar lines in Brooklyn). However, private operators, and later the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation's Brooklyn Bus Corporation, began operating bus routes by 1919, starting in the outskirts towards Coney Island and East New York.
The B1 runs from Bay Ridge east to Kingsborough Community College in Manhattan Beach along Bay Ridge Avenue, 13th Avenue, 86th Street, and Brighton Beach Avenue. It connects with the Bay Ridge Avenue (BMT Fourth Avenue Line), Bay Parkway (BMT West End Line), 25th Avenue (BMT West End Line), Gravesend-86th Street (BMT Sea Beach Line), Avenue X (IND Culver Line), Ocean Parkway (BMT Brighton Line), and Brighton Beach (BMT Brighton Line) subway stations.
The 'B3' runs from Bath Beach east to Bergen Beach along Avenue U. It connects with the 25th Avenue (BMT West End Line), Avenue U (BMT Sea Beach Line), Avenue U (IND Culver Line), and Avenue U (BMT Brighton Line) subway stations.
The B3 (or B3A) was started by the Kings Coach Company in 1922 along Avenue U between 25th Avenue on the West End Line in Gravesend and Flatbush Avenue (at the end of the Flatbush Avenue Line trolley and B2 bus) in Flatlands. The B3B, which was later renumbered the B31, ran southeast on Gerritsen Avenue from Avenue U to Gerritsen Beach. The route was extended north on Flatbush Avenue and Utica Avenue to the south end of the Utica Avenue Line trolley at Avenue N, and east along Avenue U to Bergen Beach, by 1969. The Utica Avenue branch is now part of the B46, the bus that replaced the Utica Avenue trolley.
The 'B4' runs from Bay Ridge east to Sheepshead Bay along Bay Ridge Parkway, Stillwell Avenue, 86th Street, Neptune Avenue, and Emmons Avenue. It connects with the 77th Street (BMT Fourth Avenue Line), 25th Avenue (BMT West End Line), Gravesend-86th Street (BMT Sea Beach Line), Avenue X (IND Culver Line), and Sheepshead Bay (BMT Brighton Line) subway stations.
The B4 was started by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation on September 28, 1931, from Bay Ridge along 77th and 78th Streets, Fourth Avenue, Bay Ridge Parkway, and Stillwell Avenue to 25th Avenue on the West End Line in Gravesend. On November 12, 1978, it was extended east along its current route to Sheepshead Bay, replacing the north half of the B21.
The 'B6' runs from Bath Beach east to the New Lots Avenue (IRT New Lots Line) subway station in East New York along Bay Parkway, Avenue J, Avenue H, Flatlands Avenue, and Cozine Avenue, with both local and limited-stop service. It connects with the Bay Parkway (BMT West End Line), Bay Parkway (BMT Sea Beach Line), Bay Parkway (IND Culver Line), Avenue J (BMT Brighton Line), Brooklyn College-Flatbush Avenue (IRT Nostrand Avenue Line), and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway (BMT Canarsie Line) subway stations.
The Brooklyn Bus Corpration began operating the B6 on August 24, 1931, running along Bay Parkway and Avenue M between Bath Beach and Avenue M on the Brighton Line. In 1938, the portion on Avenue M became an extension of the B9, and the B6 was extended to East Flatbush, absorbing most of the B21 and using a new routing on Glenwood Road and Avenue H. Further extensions were made in the 1950s to Ralph Avenue and 1960s to Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway on the Canarsie Line, and it later absorbed the B84 to Spring Creek and was extended to New Lots Avenue on the New Lots Line.
The 'B7' runs from Midwood or Flatlands north to the Halsey Street (BMT Jamaica Line) subway station in Bedford-Stuyvesant along Kings Highway and Saratoga Avenue. It connects with the Kings Highway (BMT Brighton Line), Saratoga Avenue (IRT New Lots Line), and Rockaway Avenue (IND Fulton Street Line) subway stations.
The B7 was started on June 29, 1930 by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation. It initially ran as it does now, along Kings Highway and Saratoga Avenue, but only from Flatbush Avenue to East New York Avenue in Ocean Hill. In 1936 it was extended north to its current end at Broadway, and some trips were later extended southwest along Kings Highway to Coney Island Avenue.
The 'B8' runs from the Bay Ridge-95th Street (BMT Fourth Avenue Line) subway station in Bay Ridge east to Brookdale Hospital in Brownsville along 18th Avenue and Avenue D. It connects with the 18th Avenue (BMT West End Line), 18th Avenue (BMT Sea Beach Line), 18th Avenue (IND Culver Line), Newkirk Avenue (BMT Brighton Line), and Newkirk Avenue (IRT Nostrand Avenue Line) subway stations.
Queens Bus Lines began operating the B8 on October 22, 1925. It ran along part of its current route, from Bath Beach along Cropsey Avenue, 18th Avenue, and Foster Avenue to Newkirk Avenue on the Nostrand Avenue Line. In 1936, the B8 was extended east to Remsen Village, replacing the B10. It was extended west to the Fort Hamilton VA hospital when it opened in 1950.
The 'B9' runs from Bay Ridge east to Kings Plaza in Marine Park along Bay Ridge Avenue, 60th Street, Avenue M, and Flatbush Avenue. It connects with the Bay Ridge Avenue (BMT Fourth Avenue Line), 59th Street (BMT Fourth Avenue Line), New Utrecht Avenue-62nd Street (BMT Sea Beach and West End Lines), Avenue N (IND Culver Line), and Avenue M (BMT Brighton Line) subway stations.
The B9 was started by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation on October 28, 1931, running from Bay Ridge to Avenue N on the Culver Line along Bay Ridge Avenue, Third Avenue, and 60th Street. It was extended east along the former route of the B6 to Avenue M on the Brighton Line in 1938, to Flatbush Avenue by 1969, and later along Flatbush Avenue to Marine Park.
The 'B11' connects the Brooklyn Army Terminal with the Brooklyn College-Flatbush Avenue (IRT Nostrand Avenue Line) subway station in Flatbush, mainly along 49th Street (westbound), 50th Street (eastbound), Avenue I, Avenue J, and Bedford Avenue. It connects with the 53rd Street (BMT Fourth Avenue Line), 50th Street (BMT West End Line), Avenue I (IND Culver Line), and Avenue J (BMT Brighton Line) subway stations.
The Brooklyn Bus Corporation began operating the B11 on September 21, 1931, connecting the Army Terminal with the Newkirk Avenue (IND Culver Line) subway station. It was cut back to 18th Avenue and 49th Street during World War II. The route was extended to Rockaway Parkway on November 12, 1978, but was truncated in the mid 1980s to FlatbushAvenue and Glenwood Road.
The 'B12' runs from the Parkside Avenue (BMT Brighton Line) subway station in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens east to Cypress Hills, mostly via Clarkson Avenue, East New York Avenue, and Liberty Avenue. It connects with the Sutter Avenue-Rutland Road (IRT New Lots Line) subway station, East New York LIRR station, and Atlantic Avenue (BMT Canarsie Line), Alabama Avenue (BMT Jamaica Line), and Liberty Avenue (IND Fulton Street Line) subway stations.
The B12 was introduced on November 23, 1931 by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation, along its current route west of East New York. On July 20, 1947, when the Bergen Street Line trolleys ceased operations, the B12 was extended east along the former streetcar route on Liberty Avenue to Cypress Hills.
The 'B13' connects the Graham Avenue (BMT Canarsie Line) subway station in Williamsburg with the Gateway Center Mall in Spring Creek, passing through Ridgewood, Queens along the way. Streets followed include Bushwick Avenue, Flushing Avenue, Wyckoff Avenue, Gates Avenue, Fresh Pond Road, Cypress Hills Street, and Crescent Street. It connects with the DeKalb Avenue (BMT Canarsie Line), Fresh Pond Road (BMT Myrtle Avenue Line), Cypress Hills (BMT Jamaica Line), Crescent Street (BMT Jamaica Line), and Euclid Avenue (IND Fulton Street Line) subway stations.
The original B13, only running from Spring Creek north to Jamaica Avenue in Cypress Hills, was started on October 5, 1921 by Independent Buses. It was soon extended north from Cypress Hills, absorbing the B19 to Ridgewood, and west to Williamsburg, replacing most of the B18, in 2002.
The 'B14' runs from the Crown Heights-Utica Avenue (IRT Eastern Parkway Line) subway station in Crown Heights east to the Brooklyn General Mail Facility in Spring Creek, mainly along Eastern Parkway, Pitkin Avenue, and Sutter Avenue. It connects with the Junius Street (IRT New Lots Line) and Sutter Avenue (BMT Canarsie Line) subway stations.
The Eastern Parkway, Brownsville and East New York Transit Relief Association began operating the bus in August 1925, from Utica Avenue to Linwood Street. It was later extended to its current length.

The 'B16' connects Fort Hamilton with the Prospect Park (BMT Brighton Line) subway station in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, mainly along Shore Road, 86th Street, Fort Hamilton Parkway, 13th Avenue (westbound), 14th Avenue (eastbound), 12th Avenue, Caton Avenue, and Ocean Avenue. It connects with the 86th Street (BMT Fourth Avenue Line), Fort Hamilton Parkway (BMT Sea Beach Line), 55th Street (BMT West End Line), Church Avenue (BMT Brighton Line), and Parkside Avenue (BMT Brighton Line) subway stations.
The Brooklyn Bus Corporation began operating the B16 on October 28, 1931, connecting Narrows Avenue in Fort Hamilton with Parkside Avenue in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. It was later extended short distances at each end.
The 'B17' runs from Canarsie northwest to the Crown Heights-Utica Avenue (IRT Eastern Parkway Line) subway station in Crown Heights along Remsen Avenue. Some trips connect with the Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway (BMT Canarsie Line) subway station.
The Brooklyn Bus Corporation introduced the B17 on August 17, 1931; it has changed little since then.
The 'B20' connects the Brooklyn General Mail Facility in Spring Creek with Ridgewood, Queens, mostly along Linden Boulevard, Wortman Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, Broadway, Decatur Street (northbound), Schaeffer Street (southbound), and Fresh Pond Road. It connects with the Pennsylvania Avenue (IRT New Lots Line), Liberty Avenue (IND Fulton Street Line), Broadway Junction, and Fresh Pond Road (BMT Myrtle Avenue Line) subway stations.
The B20 was introduced by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation on November 30, 1931, running only north of Broadway. It was extended south via Mother Gaston Boulevard, Fulton Street, and Pennsylvania Avenue to Linden Boulevard in 1936, and later rerouted and extended along its current route.

The 'B31' connects Gerritsen Beach with the Kings Highway (BMT Brighton Line) subway station in Midwood along Gerritsen Avenue and Avenue R.
The B31 was introduced by the Kings Coach Company in 1922 as the 'B3B', a branch of the B3 south from Avenue U. It was later extended to the Kings Highway subway station.
The B82 runs from Seaview Avenue in Starrett City(Spring Creek Towers) to Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island.
The B83 runs from Seaview Avenue in Starrett City(Spring Creek Towers) to the Broadway Junction subway station.
The 'B88' was a short lived "Culture Bus Loop II" in Brooklyn and Manhattan in the 1970s, along with Loop I (M41) and Loop III (Bx56).
