'BBC Radio Newcastle' is the BBC Local Radio service English metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear. It broadcasts from its studios (known as the 'Pink Palace') on Barrack Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. The station was formerly part of the BBC Night Network. It is one of the most listened to BBC Local Radio Radio stations abroad.

The Pontop Pike transmitter broadcasts the strongest signal on 95.4FM. This transmitter, one of the first in the country, provides Tyneside with national radio frequencies, terrestrial television, BBC DAB National and Digital One. The 96FM frequency from Chatton covers most of the populated areas of east Northumberland and the transmitter has national radio frequencies and television channels. The other two FM transmitters are much weaker. The Fenham transmitter, for west Newcastle and Gateshead situated close to the studios on Barrack Road, also broadcasts television, national radio, BBC DAB National, Digital One, the MXR North East 12C multiplex, 100-102 Century FM on 96.2, Metro Radio on 103 and Galaxy 105-106 on 105.6. The Newton transmitter also has television channels, national radio, 100-102 Century FM on 96.4, Metro Radio on 103.2, and Galaxy 105-106 on 105.8. The DAB signal comes mainly from Burnhope (near Consett), and also Fenham (lower power) on the EMAP Digital Tyne & Wear 11C multiplex.

Programming


Morning

On weekdays, the station kicks off at 5am with Gilly Hope. From 6.30am - 10am, there is the award winningMike Parr breakfast show. From 10am - 1pm there is Paul Wappat and Ian Robinson (with his penchant for wearing a kilt).
Afternoon

The afternoon show from 1 - 4pm is presented by Julia Hankin. Julia's show has some of the biggest celebrities on her show, plus she covers items like health, fitness and entertainment. The drivetime show from 4 - 6.30pm is presented Monday - Thursday by Jon Harle Jon Harle and on a Friday by Martin Emmerson.
Night

The late night show (unnoffically called 'The Late Paddy MacDee Show') is presented by Paddy MacDee from 10pm - 1am. Paddy does a very popular 'Text Quiz' slot in the first hour. Question Master's include Brian Mounsey (The Original), Paul S. Mabley, Tony from Gosforth and Mietek from Montreal, Canada.
Others

Other highlights of the output are
Clarky and Wilko whose excellent programmes are a great listen. They are on air on a Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon and are an Ant & Dec in waiting.
Sport

Comprehensive sports commentaries are provided covering Newcastle United Mick Lowes and John Anderson, Sunderland AFC with Nick Barnes and Gary Bennett and exclusive coverage of the Newcastle Falcons provided by Kevin Williams and Ian Smith.
