History

The programme started on 17 September 1962. Its predecessor, ''BBC Wales News'', started in 1957, being originally hosted by Michael Aspel. Former presenters of ''Wales Today'' include John Darran David Parry-Jones and Vincent Kane.
Format

The programme is usually shown on weekdays between 18.30 and 19.00, immediately following the BBC Six O'Clock News on BBC One, often with no announcements or programme promotions in between. The programme can be watched in any part of the UK (and Europe) on digital satellite channel 972 on the BBC UK regional TV on satellite service.
Shorter, 10-minute editions also follow the One O'Clock and Ten O'Clock news programmes on BBC One on weekdays and the early-evening national news bulletins at weekends. On BBC 2W, the Welsh digital variant of BBC Two, a 10-minute edition is shown most weeknights at 21.30 under the name ''Wales Today on 2W''. The programme titles remain the same however.
It achieves reasonable viewing figures of 350,000–400,000 for its main 18.30 edition. Its main competitor is ITV's ''Wales Tonight'' which broadcasts in the earlier 18.00–18.30 time slot.
Presenters

The programme's two main presenters are currently Jamie Owen and Lucy Owen, supplemented by Claire Summers. The usual weather forecaster is Derek Brockway and the main sports presenter is Bob Humphrys (the brother of BBC journalist and presenter John Humphrys), supplemented by Jason Mohammad. The present studio set design was introduced on 7 March 2005.
