'Baiju Bawra' was a legendary Indian dhrupadiya singer.[1]
Baiju Bawra was a court musician of the Raja of Chanderi (now in District Guna, M.P.).Soonafterward he went to Gwalher (modern Gwalior) & became a leading singer there in the famous school of music established by Raja Mansingh. It is also said that he was patronised by Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat.[2]
According to a legend, Baiju's original name was 'Baijnath Pandit' and he was the disciple of Swami Haridas, the guru of Tansen.He learnt dhrupad music in Dagurvaani in Vrindavan.
Baiju Bawra was a magnificent dhrupad gayak (singer) and use to lighten the lamp by singing Raag Deepak, used to produce Rains by singing Raag Megh, Raag Megh Malhar, Raag Gaud Malhar.
There were other great singers also during his time like Baba Ramdaas who made the Raag Ramdasi Malhar , Another great singer was Nayak Charju who invented a new raag named as Charju ki Malhar.
Gopal nayak was student of Baiju bawra and he went to Kashmir state as a court musician. There Baiju Bawra defeated him on challenge given by the king of Kashmir, there Baiju bawra sung raag Bhimpalasi.After this defeat Gopal died and his crimation was done on the bank of river Satluj. The bones of Gopal's body sank into river and then the widow of Gopal asked Baiju Bawra to have the bones of her Husband, Then Baiju Bawra taught a new type of Malhar to her daughter named Meera and after a week, Meera performed that Raag on the bank of Satluj infront of great crowd after finishing the dhruvpaad bones of her father came out on the bank, due to heavy crumbling in the River's bottom.From that time that raag is known as Meera ki Malhar.
Baiju used to sing Raag Bahar and Flowers used to come from a non flowered plant,shrub etc., generally quicker than those where Baiju not used to sing.All these are facts and written in old historical books preserved in Jai Vilas mahal Gwalior.He taught many students and was the President of Music School.
He was called "bawra" (crazy) because he was crazy in love with a dancer of Chanderi nagari. Baiju Bawra is said to have defeted Miyan Tansen in a singing Competition, held at court of the Mughal empror Akbar in Agra.Historian Abul Fazal of Akbar court and historian Faqirullah of Aurangzeb's court have written the matter in detail.Tansen was defeated by him and there tansen touched his feet and asked for his own life, Baiju was a kind hearted person and he went again to Gwalher ( now Gwalior Madhya Pradesh ).
''Baiju Bawra'', a Hindi-language film was made on him in 1952. In the movie, Baiju is a musician who believes that Tansen is responsible for his father's death. He attempts to avenge his father's death by challenging Tansen to a musical duel.
