'Barry Hankerson' is an American record producer. He is the founder of Blackground Records, a label he created in the early 1990s and continues to run with his son, Jomo Hankerson.
Hankerson was once a television producer and a politician in Detroit, Michigan.
He managed and produced The Winans and produced Ron Milner's play "Don't Get God Started" in 1988, in addition to managing the career of Aaliyah until her death and Toni Braxton until a dispute over management of her recording career.He also managed R.Kelly and introduced Aaliyah, his late niece, to Kelly.
Hankerson was formerly married to soul star Gladys Knight.
On January 12, 2007, Toni Braxton filed a lawsuit in the U.S District Court in Manhattan against Hankerson for $10 million, alleging "fraud, deception and double dealing," in addition to mismanaging her relationship with Arista Records.Neumeister, L. Braxton's accusations were discredited when the suit was settled by an agreement that called for her to pay Barry Hankerson $375,000 plus a percentage of the sales of her next album, with Hankerson not paying any amount to Braxton to settle the suit. .
