BAY CITY (ANOTHER WORLD)
'Bay City' is the setting of the television soap opera ''Another World''.
Until the early 1980s, it was not known which state Bay City was in. Generically, the show was just set in the midwest. It was at this time that the writers specified that ''Another World'' was located in Bay City, Illinois. The city on the show is not related to Bay City, Michigan, where many viewers assumed ''Another World'' took place.
Originally a tiny hamlet, the town became the headquarters for Cory Publishing. Publishing magnate, Mac Cory (played by Douglass Watson) began publishing the magazine ''Brava'' there. His daughter, Iris, continued the tradition when Mac died, starting a magazine called ''Sophisticate''.
Around town...
By the late 1980s Bay City was firmly established as a city in Illinois on Lake Michigan, near other Procter & Gamble soap towns of Oakdale (As the World Turns) and Springfield ( Guiding Light). Bay City was no longer a simple suburb, but a large city that was headquarters to Cory Publishing and the Hudson Group, the latter run by Michael Hudson. The city was also home to Frame Construction and a renowned hospital, Bay City General Hospital. The arts were big in Bay City with galleries, artists and even a music production company, D & M Music, were located there.
Cory Publishing was set in a sprawling complex with the posh main offices located in a large downtown tower where Mac's office had a gorgeous view of the downtown and the lake.
The modern Hudson Group offices were set in another tower downtown. Many residents lived in the upscale Love Tower, the most notable being Felica Gallant, Donna Love Hudson, Lucas and Iris Cory Wheeler, who lived in a posh penthouse. The building was crowned with the city's premiere restaurant, "Tops", owned by novelist Felicia.
Other restaurants in Bay City over the years were Tall Boys, the North Woods Inn, Sassy's, The Pelican Club, The Harbor Club, Smiley's, Carlino's, The Daily Grind and The Lakeview Country Club.
Bay City residents could shop at Jacobson's Department store and in the Bayside Mall or at many of the shops and galleries such as the Stafford Gallery and Wallingford's Bookstore.
After shopping one could visit the Bayside Park to jog or stop by the Cory Fitness Spa for exercise.
Over the years many types of living were seen in Bay City from the Frame/Hudson farm to the lush Cory estate located right along the bay, there was a variety of real esate in the town. The middle class areas included the Carlino, Perinni, Hobson, Fletcher & McKinnon homes while in the more upscale old town areas one would find the Matthews, the Winthrops, the McKinnon/Hudson cottage, & the Burrell's. Along the luxurious bay one could find the esates of the Harrisons, the Carringtons, the Loves, and of course, the Corys. Outside of town were the Frame and Hudson farms. The downtown and the dock areas featured Lofts and Bayview Court, which were trendy places to live at one time or another for Amanda, Sam, Vicky, Ryan, Dean, Jenna, Josie, Gary, Morgan and a plethora of other young people.
