BAYSIDE, DUBLIN
'Bayside' (''Cois Bá'' in Irish) is a small middle class, residential Northside suburb of Dublin, Ireland.
Bayside is located close to the sea, about 10km north-east of the city's centre, on the coast sheltered by North Bull Island. Built in the 1970s, it is situated between Kilbarrack, from which it was formed, Baldoyle and Sutton; it meets the latter two where the coast road branches for Sutton Cross and Baldoyle. Established under Dublin Corporation, the area was later allocated to Fingal County Council when County Dublin was split into 4 administrative areas.
Bayside is accessed from the main coastal road from the city centre to Howth, and easily accessible from Dublin city using the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART)[1] suburban rail system, with its own station, and by Dublin Bus routes (in 2007) 17A, 31, 32, 32A, 32B and 105. Bayside railway station opened on 11 June 1973.[1]
Falling within the postal code area of Dublin 13, Bayside comprises Sarto, Verbena, Alden, Sutton Park and the various Bayside Boulevards, and is built up around a shopping and civic central area. There is a modern Roman Catholic parish church, the Church of the Resurrection.
Most property in the district is two-storey terraced or semi-detached housing with two or three bedrooms and front and back gardens. Plans to build a multi-storey apartment complex at the location of the current shopping centre car-park are currently (2007) being resisted by local residents.
Bayside was a planned development on part of the lands of the large old district of Kilbarrack, whose largest settlement lay near what is now the centre of the new area. Title deeds for the area still show Kilbarrack. Kilbarrack's historic church and graveyard (shown below), circa 13th Century, lies about two thirds along Bayside's seafront, towards the road junction which marks the beginning of Sutton and Baldoyle.
There is one primary school, Scoil Mhuire agus Iosef, and the district is serviced by a number of post-primary schools in nearby districts.
Former residents of Bayside include Ronan Keating of Boyzone.
