The 'bell tower of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin' is a 77.17 metre high observation tower that was built in 1934 after plans by Professor Werner March. The steel skeleton construction was covered with limestone plates. After a fire the tower was no longer stable and was therefore blown up on 15 February 1947. Between 1960 and 1962 it was rebuilt following the old plans. In it hangs a bell weighing 4.5 tonnes with the inscription, "I call the youth of the world - Olympic Games 1936". It has been re-cast since the old bell was damaged by use as a gunnery target and useless.
