BENEDICT CANYON, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

'Benedict Canyon' is an area between Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills in the city of Los Angeles, California. Harold Lloyd's estate, Greenacres, once occupied most of its prime land. In the 1970s its grounds were subdivided.
On July 25, 2006, it suffered a brush fire that was put out in about four hours. The fire burned the roof of one home that suffered slight damage and came within a few feet of the backyards of two homes. No homes were destroyed, with one damaged on Clear View drive. The fire burned 30 acres. 250 firefighters battled the blaze as well as six water-dropping helicopters. 40 fire stations responded. Fire officials credited a homeowner in the burn area for clearing the brush from the property to prevent the fire from reaching her own home and keep it from spreading to more homes. The fire started up again on July 27 and burned about one more acre. The flare up is believed to be caused by a small hot spot that ignited some brush. The Benedict Canyon Fire was caused by the heat from the exhaust pipe of a van that was parked over dry grass.
