'Berbere' (
Amharic: በáˆá‰ ሬ ''berberÄ“'',
Tigrinya: በáˆá‰ ረ ''berbere'') is a
spice mixture whose ingredients usually include
chile peppers,
ginger,
cloves,
coriander,
allspice,
rue berries, and
ajwain (also known as bishop's weed). It is a key ingredient in the
Cuisine of Ethiopia and
Cuisine of Eritrea.
Berbere ingredients are sometimes plants that are less well known internationally, including both cultivated plants and those that grow wild in Ethiopia, for example ''
