History
Birkenhead was enfranchised in 1861, and the constituency was abolished by the Representation of the People Act 1918 with effect from the 1918 general election. It was then replaced by the new Birkenhead East and Birkenhead West constituencies.
Since the constituency was re-established at the 1950 general election, it has returned only Labour MPs.
Boundaries
The constituency covers Birkenhead, in the Wirral on Merseyside.
The boundary commission has recommended that Birkenhead gain the entire Prenton ward from Wirral West (the ward is currently shared between the two constituencies). This is unlikely to affect the ward much as although the Prenton Ward contains a lot of large houses, it also contains large ex/local authority estates and has a Birkenhead postal code.
