BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY
'Black Hills State University' was founded in 1883 as Dakota Territorial Normal School for teacher training. The school could not be maintained and was closed in the spring of 1885. The school was re-opened in the fall of 1885 and became State Normal School in 1889 when South Dakota became a state. The school was renamed Black Hills Teachers College in 1941 and was renamed Black Hills State College in 1964. The school was finally renamed Black Hills State University by 1990. Black Hills State University is located in Spearfish, South Dakota and is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents.
Black Hills State University offers a number of degrees to students including 56 bachelor degree programs, 4 master degree programs, 7 associate degree programs, and 23 pre-professional programs. The bachelor degree programs include accounting, American Indian studies, applied technical science, art, biology, business administration, chemistry, communication art, English, entrepreneurial studies, environmental physical science, health services administration, history, human resource management, human services, industrial technology, marketing, mass communication, mathematics, music, outdoor education, physical education, political science, psychology, social science, sociology, Spanish, speech, theatre, tourism and hospitality, and wellness management. The school also offers students numerous education degrees in many fields.
Kay Schallenkamp (BS, Northern State University; MA, University of South Dakota; Ph.D, University of Colorado, 1982; all in communication disorders) was selected as the University President starting July 1, 2006
