BLACKWOOD, SOUTH AUSTRALIA


'Blackwood' is a south eastern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills/Mount Lofty Ranges. It is adjacent to Belair, Bellevue Heights, Coromandel Valley, Craigburn Farm, Eden Hills, Glenalta and Hawthorndene also known as the Mitcham Hills area.

Churches


The Mitcham Hills Interchurch Council members include two Anglican parishes, five Uniting Church in Australia congregations, two Baptist churches, a Roman Catholic parish with two centres, a Lutheran parish and a Church of Christ. There are also a number of pentecostal churches including the The Hills Christian Family Centre and The Frontier Christian centre

Schools


Blackwood High School and Blackwood Primary School in Eden Hills, along with Belair Primary School, Bellevue Heights Primary School, Coromandel Valley Primary School, Eden Hills Primary School and Hawthorndene Primary School provide the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program with the High School also offering the IB Diploma. Other schools in the district are St John's Grammar School at Belair and St Peter's Lutheran School at Craigburn Farm.

Transport


Blackwood Railway Station is a transport hub with buses to Adelaide and the outer Southern suburbs, trains to Adelaide and Belair. There is also a daily commuter bus to and from the Eastern Fleurieu Peninsula passing through Blackwood.

Residents


The suburbs of Blackwood, Glenalta and Craigburn Farm had a combined population of 6,379 in 2,596 households in 2001 [1].
Norman Tindale, an anthropologist, archaeologist and entomologist, lived in Blackwood while he was working at the South Australian Museum.
The hip hop group the Hilltop Hoods are from the area.

Politics


Blackwood is in the City of Mitcham local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Davenport (where it is represented by Liberal MP Iain Evans) and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby (where it is represented by Liberal MP Andrew Southcott).
