As of the census of 2000, there were 703 people, 298 households, and 188 families residing in the town. The population density was 393.4/km² (1,024.4/mi²). There were 377 housing units at an average density of 211.0/km² (549.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 67.14% White, 8.25% African American, 17.64% Native American, 0.28% Pacific Islander, 1.00% from other races, and 5.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.13% of the population.
There were 298 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% were married couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $14,063, and the median income for a family was $21,354. Males had a median income of $21,125 versus $16,563 for females. The per capita income for the town was $9,696. About 37.3% of families and 37.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 47.3% of those under age 18 and 29.5% of those age 65 or over.
