BOTTLENECK
A 'bottleneck' is literally the neck of a glass or pottery bottle. Figuratively, it is used to refer to the narrowest point through which something flows along a route, thereby either constricting the flow, or causing it to become faster at that point than elsewhere.
Bottleneck may refer to:
★ In 'music', "bottleneck" is a common term for slide guitar, because the broken-off neck of a bottle was and is often used to play that style of guitar. This musical form is most popular among Blues guitarists but is also found in some country and rock playing.
★ In 'traffic', a Bottleneck (traffic) that restricts the flow of traffic and will cause jams if the flow is larger than the capacity of the bottleneck
★ In 'timekeeping', an hourglass has a bottleneck at its mid-point whose diameter governs the time that granular contents of a given mass will take to pass through.
★ In 'logistics', a Bottleneck (logistics) is one process in a chain of processes, such that its limited capacity reduces the capacity of the whole chain. This may be relevant in project management.
★ In 'computer science', ''bottleneck'' may refer to:
★
★ In 'computer architecture', some authors refer to the Von Neumann architecture#Von Neumann bottleneck between processor and memory. See also Optimization (computer science)
★
★ In 'telecommunications networks', a Bottleneck (network) may arise, thereby disrupting throughput with lag.
★
★ In 'software', a bottleneck (software) is a point constricting performance
★ In 'population genetics' and 'human evolution', a Population bottleneck (or 'genetic bottleneck') is an evolutionary event in which a significant percentage of a population or species is killed or otherwise prevented from reproducing, and the population is reduced by 50% or more, often by several orders of magnitude.
★ In 'history', the Free State Bottleneck (1919-1923) was a short-lived quasi-state that existed in Germany during the time of the Weimar Republic. It was formed as a consequence of the French and American occupation of the Rhineland following World War I.
★ In 'ammunition', bottleneck refers to a cartridge in which the diameter is smaller where the bullet is attached than the remainder of the assembly.
