BRADY CENTER TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE
(Redirected from Brady Center)
A gun control lobby group, the ''Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence'' was founded in 1974 as ''The National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH)'' by Dr. Mark Borinsky, a gun ban advocate. This organization has changed it’s name several times in it’s history. The most known name was “Handgun Control Incorporated” or “HCI“. It has also gone under “The National Council to Ban Handguns”, “The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence“, ”The Violence Policy Center”, “The Center for the Prevention of Handgun Violence”, and “The Brady Campaign” . The change from “Handgun Control Inc.” to the ''Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence'' was prompted by the loss of several Democratic House and Senate seats in the 1994 elections. HCI was the driving force behind Bill Clintons 1994 gun ban, which angered most gun owning voters both Republican and Democrat. As prospective Democratic candidates disassociated themselves from HCI in following elections, the organization had several name changes.
The “Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence” is headed by James Brady, former White House Press Secretary to Ronald W. Reagan and his wife Sarah Brady. James Brady was seriously wounded and became permanently disabled during an assassination attempt of President Reagan in March 1981 by would-be assassin John Hinckley Junior. Brady and his wife Sarah subsequently became leading advocates of gun control. Although “Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence” is a registered not-for-profit organization, the Brady’s are paid well for public speaking events and gun control seminars.
Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence contends that the gun is the cause of violence and the criminals are co-conspirators. The Legal Action Project is the another part of the Brady Center. It promotes civil suits for monetary gains on behalf of victims and their families.
Notable among its many activities, in 2004, the Legal Action Project gained a profit for the organization by a $2.5 million settlement from Bull's Eye Shooter Supply in Tacoma, Washington and Bushmaster Firearms, Inc. of Windham, Maine on behalf of survivors and families of some of the victims killed during the Beltway sniper attacks in October 2002.
