BREARLEY SCHOOL

The 'Brearley School' is an all-girls' private school in New York City, USA. It is located on the luxe Upper East Side of Manhattan and is a member of the Interschool. The school is divided into the Lower School (K-4), Middle School (5-8) and Upper School (9-12). There is a total of approximately 670 students enrolled in grades K-12, with about fifty students in a class.
Founded in 1884 by Samuel Brearley, the school is still, despite its relative youth, considered the sister school of The Collegiate School, the oldest educational institution in North America. The Brearley School has moved three times during its history and is currently located in a twelve-story building on East 83rd street in Manhattan, overlooking the East River.
In many informations, The Brearley school is considered to be the best preparatory school in the US.

Academics

Academically, Brearley has a reputation for being one of the most challenging schools in the nation. The curriculum is based on the study of the liberal arts, and is designed to give students a solid background in all disciplines. The English and History departments are especially strong: they focus on the development of writing skills (in Middle School) and analysis (in Upper School). All students are required to study at least one language, and most take two. Languages currently taught are Spanish, French, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Greek. In the fall of 2004, the school piloted a new program that incorporated the use of iPods in language classes, allowing students to download portable audio lessons. The Brearley School also places considerable emphasis on music, art, and drama.
"Within a highly articulated 13-year curriculum, and with a 7:1 student-faculty ratio, teaching methods are varied, flexible and pragmatic, taking into account individual patterns of development and ways of learning. [Their] program is designed to challenge [their]eager, able students intellectually, and to give each one the opportunity to gain competence, self-reliance and self-knowledge through academic achievement as well as experience in the visual and performing arts, sports, community service and a wide variety of extracurricular activities." Sports facilities

A separate building, the "Field House" on East 87th Street, has facilities for physical education and athletics including track, soccer, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, cross country, squash, lacrosse and field hockey. In 2005, both Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Cross Country won State Championships. Brearley's Varsity Cross Country team won the New York State Championship again in the fall of 2006.
Brearley's school/team colors are Red and White.

Facebook Controversy

In April 2007, Maite Cubilette '10 created a controversial group on the social networking site Facebook entitled "8th Graders need to back off 9th grade guys especially other peoples BF'S". Its purpose was to express the disdain of how 8th grade girls would try to seduce the boyfriends of their older counterparts (particularly those in 9th grade). Although originally created as a serious group between Cubilette and her friends, the group rose to widespread acclaim and popularity when a college student accidentally stumbled across the group. Soon after, hundreds of college-aged facebook users began to swarm the group, mocking the intentions of Cubilette and her cohorts by imitating the internet mannerisms and dialects of middle and high school-aged girls. At the height of the group's fame, creator Cubilette reorganized the group so that it banned outside users to join (i.e, members could only join the group on an invite-only basis). This came just as the group was starting to get considerable buzz on VH1 and IvyGate. Today, there are rumors that the group continues to exist in secret, although similar tribute groups to Cubilette's original have been created.
