Musical career
He began his musical career as a recording artist on Career Records, a subsidiary of Arista Records, in 1995. While on Career Records, he released an eponymous album, which produced three minor chart hits. He later put his career on hiatus to start a family. James resurfaced on Arista's Nashville division in 2002, charting the minor Top 40 singles "Chasin' Amy" and "After All"; neither single was put onto an album.
Eventually, he gained fame as a songwriter, and has written several No. 1 singles for other artists, including "Who I Am" by Jessica Andrews; "Blessed" by Martina McBride; "When the Sun Goes Down" by Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker; and "Jesus, Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. In addition, he has co-written songs for Sara Evans, Josh Gracin, Lonestar, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, and Wynonna.
