BRIAN GILES

'Brian Stephen Giles' (born January 21, 1971, in El Cajon, California) is a Major League Baseball right fielder who plays for the San Diego Padres (2003–present). Giles (pronounced JYLES) attended Granite Hills High School and did not attend college, but played with the Cleveland Indians (1995–1998) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1999–2003). Giles had been crowded out in the outfield in Cleveland by players such as Manny Ramirez, and was dealt to Pittsburgh before the 1999 season for LH relief pitcher Ricardo Rincon. In August of 2003, Pittsburgh dealt Giles to the San Diego Padres for OF Jason Bay, LHP Oliver Perez, and RHP Cory Stewart, allowing him to in essence return home (El Cajon is a suburb of San Diego). He bats and throws left-handed and has a career line of .295/.408/.525 with 260 home runs, 334 doubles and 1,006 walks in 1,518 games. During his time in Pittsburgh, his OPS+ (a stat to compare players taking into consideration the ball park they played in) was never lower than 148 (and was as high as 173), meaning that he had at least a 48% higher OPS (on-base plus slugging) than than the average player, where the average is defined at 100. His OPS was higher than .950 every year in Pittsburgh, his first chance to play regularly; an OPS over .900 places a player in the upper echelon of his league.
His brother Marcus Giles is a second baseman who is also playing for the Padres, reunited with his brother.
