Bridgend normally elects Labour MPs although it went Conservative at the 1983 election landslide. Its current MP is Madeleine Moon (Labour) from Porthcawl and its Assembly member is Carwyn Jones (Labour). However, Labour, while remaining the largest party, lost control of Bridgend county borough council at the last elections to a "rainbow coalition" of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Independents and Plaid Cymru.
