History

The 'Bridgeport Sound Tigers' were founded in 2001. The team colors are navy blue and orange, as the logo is a tiger head predominantly in orange. The color of the tiger's head was recently changed from a lighter blue on August 8, 2006. They play at the Bridgeport Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They have been fairly successful during their time in the AHL, even making the Calder Cup Finals during their first season, losing to the Chicago Wolves four games to one. They were coached by former Islanders head coach Steve Stirling for their first two seasons, and have produced Islanders mainstays Trent Hunter, Rick DiPietro, Chris Campoli, and Sean Bergenheim. Other successful NHLers bred in the Bridgeport organization include Raffi Torres (Oilers), Jeff Hamilton (Hurricanes), and Mattias Weinhandl (Linköpings HC, Swedish Elite League). The team will continue to serve as a center for developing NHL caliber talent until their current lease ends after the 2020-2021 season.
The Sound Tigers' mascot is named Storm.

Rivalry

The Hartford Wolfpack, the New York Rangers AHL affiliate is the Sound Tigers' main rival. This is due largely to the fact that Bridgeport and Hartford are two of the biggest cities in Connecticut, and because the Islanders and Rangers share a huge rivalry. Sound Tiger fans shout "Hartford Sucks" at games during the "Let's Go Band" chant.
